Preventing Communication Overload

When was the last time that you went through your email? Do you cringe every time that you hear the business intercom systems go off? Are you constantly worried that you aren’t going to be able to keep up with everything that is going on around you on a regular basis? Then you may be a point in your life where you are going through what is known as communication overload. Why does this happen and does it actually matter to us when we are running businesses and taking care of other such things?

In today’s world, we’re inundated with instant communication. Text messages, emails, social media, and whatever else we use makes it so that we are easy to access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We can easily get overloaded with all of the information that we are being slammed with, and there are a lot of things that can occur because of communication overload. Here are a few of the things that may occur to those who are suffering from communication overload.

  • They start to forget things, because they’re starting to get more communication than their minds can process.
  • They feel that they have to “disconnect” because they are getting slammed with communication.
  • They start to disregard emails and other forms of communication that may be important, because they’re so overloaded that they just start going through emails and other messages and deleting them without actually going over them.

As you can tell, some of these can be big problems, especially if teachers are trying to communicate with parents via electronic communications or if bosses want to talk to their employees on their days off. You want to make sure that you do what you can to prevent this from becoming an issue, no matter what field you work in.
